The Humanity of Words

A computer will never take the place of a human wordsmith/editor. Robots and artificial intelligence cannot duplicate the true emotion that lives in the connotative nuances of words. Only the heart and soul can breathe life into black-and-white ink splotches on a crumbled page which will become art, drama, perception, persuasion, and pre-cognition. It is our history, our current timeline, and our future. The human brain and Universal mind produces words that sing, inform, rejoice, or weep; sometimes, most often heard in the silent pauses between descriptive utterances of voice and breath.

Hence, the philosophy of one lone humble poet and writer, “bowmanauthor/bowmaneditor”.

Fickle Inspiration

Fantasy Inspiration

I see the trinkets that surround me

But do I really see?

These are so precious to me

They inspire and capture my creativity

But not today

I have no words to say

But those that get in the way

My inspiration does not shine

In silence I seek the divine

And all will be well in time

My Annie doll will speak her mind

And tell me of her trip from Ireland

When she came alone to Ellis Island

The castle will sing its tune, the dancer spinning

And a new story will be beginning

To weave its way into my soul

The faerie pixie will rise and flow

Through ancient dreams and glowing scenes

Dancing on the sun’s rays, amidst the colors of the rainbow

The Kindle will light with fire: reds and yellows; golds and blues

I’ll slip on my glasses so I can see true

The beautiful forests and haunted hills

I’ll experience thrills and wills and chills

As a new world comes alive inside my brain

Some of you may think me insane

As the keyboard beckons and calls my name

Not all the words have gone up in flames

I just had to write them to know their game

Of hide and seek, catch me if you can, find me if you dare

The words will scatter unless you show them you care.

NOW THE STORY LOST IN TIME…

HAS RETURNED TO SPARKLE AND SHINE!

What Have You Written Today?

My Writing Space

What have you written today? An entry in a journal? A creative poem, a short story, a few pages of a novel or nonfiction book? A news media article, a self-help idea to aid someone else, a blog on your life or your profession?

Everyday there is something to share to show you care and hone your craft of communication. You never know whose life you will touch and inspire to create new ideas and concepts that our world needs more than ever to heal, grow, and evolve.

Words are meaningful, enriching, and important … use them graciously and respectfully…

Writing is like a game of Scrabble…you need the right letters to make the right words…

writing

I am a notorious wordsmith; this is my obsession.

I agonize over a conjunction or a preposition.

Adjectives are dear friends to me,

But my descriptive pals must let me see

A word painting come to life on the page!

I don’t count the words to set my gauge

Of whether I’ve said enough or way too much.

I brainstorm the words in a mad rush,

Then go back to the start and begin again.

I cut and I add, question and doubt, change and rearrange.

It’s like a Scrabble game; you make the words fit

With the luck of the draw, bit by bit,

Combined with the letters on the gameboard in play

To select words in a new and different way.

Such is the story and frank admission

Of a writer of words with a crazed obsession.

Deborah A. Bowman, wordsmith

Learning about blogging is like learning to write all over again. Now the blank page is white light. Write enough, but not too much.

A blank page is scary stuff! It looks at you in silence. It is a challenge. It is a voice crying out to be heard, if only you could see where it’s coming from. A character is hiding in the wings, trying to make a grand entrance, but only “you” can see him/her. Only “you” can hear the voice.

A blank page is so . . . blank, so empty, when there’s so much inside you. What do you say? Do you trust yourself. Never!

Your feelings rush to the surface to try and fill up the space. Then, everything gets cluttered, and there’s too many words. A dash of white space is comforting, silent, pleasing.

Empty is too empty. Cluttered is too wordy. Being too emotional is suspect. What do you share? Why do you care? What do you dare . . . write on the blank page . . .

Fill it, but not too full; not too sparse. Make it just right. But just right for whom?

I send my words and white space to whomever is listening.

Usually, I’m comical, silly, laughing, but not tonight. Tonight I want the white space to say as much as the words.

Technology may change but the process remains the same. Creativity doesn’t change for it originates in the mind.

Technology may change but the process remains the same. Creativity doesn't change for it originates in the mind.

The craft of writing and designing, indeed all arts!, begins and ends in the human mind. Whatever the media, whatever the age, words and images will be written, drawn, captured, and shared.

I hope the future allows robots to process what the human mind creates. There’s no limit to our mind’s capacity. We’ll never run out of memory and storage space. We’ll never be restricted by the number of pixels, number of words, number of pages, or hues of color.

I chose shades of gray and black for this representation, augmenting every piece to my personal taste, which may not be your personal taste. I cannot count the different shades of gray or the quantity of black ink required to print this on a press.

I remember when camera-ready business or home printers did not exist. Press inspections were round-the-clock, interrupted only by brewing a new pot of coffee to stay awake.

The process is the same, but technology lets my mind’s eye create that which only I can see or someone else describes to me. I must “see” their vision in my mind in order to create it. Trial-and-error and having an open mind will never be replaced by technology. Technology allows us all to share the mind’s words, dreams, visions, images, and thoughts. The technological age is upon us.

My New Tag Line

While developing my new business card for the writer/editor/proofreader/designer hat I wear (oh hum, I know so boring, but so necessary), I had a little help from a business partner to come up with my new tag line:

Clasid Consultants Publishing: More Than Mere Words and Pictures!

What do ya’ think? Comments, suggestions, snide remarks?

My love and passion is still fiction. I just need to find the time to write it all down! Then the hard part begins: the edit, the proofreading, the cover design, the fonts, the leading, the layout, the graphics, the logo . . . on and on and on . . . but the better it looks, the better you look. Another tagline I may use at some point:

Words are your “real” first impression!
